I don’t think Letterman joked about rape of a 14 year old – rather, about the poor choices that Sarah has patterned onto her progeny.
Sarah is patently asserting that her knocked up unmarried duaghter is not unusual, and perhaps in Sarah’s mind her daughter’s experience/choices are defensibly ‘normal’, and in fact might even be encouraged – and THAT’S what makes the joke funny…Sarah herself doesn’t teach modesty or advocate less flambouyant sexuality for her daughters, so they naturally attract the sexuality that they emit – this is natural.

What amazes me is all of the idiots that are claiming the joke was about her 14 year old daughter when we ALL KNOW it was about Bristol. You know, the one who had premarital sex, ended up an unwed mother, and advocates for abstinence only.

A 62 year old man who makes jokes like that about an 18 year old girl even one who had a child out of wedlock has no manliness or class.
A girl in a long term relationship with a fellow and she gets pregnant cannot be classified with some girl who is willing to have a one night stand with every guy she goes out with. Usually such girls care deeply about the young man involved and he has brought a lot of pressure on her to have sex and she has fear of losing him.
If the day ever comes and you have a daughter and it just so happens she has a long term relationship with a boy that she cares for and winds up getting pregnant, you won’t take it so kindly at all if someone makes some deprecating remark about her. This sort of thing happens in the best of families. Often time girls like that wind up hurt and devastated.
Letterman should come right out and make an apology without trying to get laughs while he is doing so. He should not use the excuse that he thought it was Britol instead of Willow.
