Can a vice president run for the presidency two additional times after s/he has already taken over the office?
That is, if a vice president has assumed the office of president of the USA (for whatever reason: death, health, resignation, etc.) can s/he constitutionally run for president in two additional elections? If so, this would suggest that a person could, theoretically, be president for up to 12 years, but only actually win two elections as a presendential candidate as limited by the constitution.
theoretically…yes.
Yes.
They can only be elected President twice.
I say yes
Yes. IF the preceding president was in the last two years of his term. Otherwise it can be only one additional term…but theoretically one can serve for just under ten years.
Yes. Lyndon Johnson assumed the presidency when JFK was assassinated. He won the 1964 election but decided not to run in 1968.
So yes, if the VP assumes office if the president dies, he can be elected in the next two cycles.
kinda, as far as I remember some one can only serve for 10 years as president. so depending on when they took office the first time, 2 years in yes but if it was 3 or more i think it is a no.
Yes. A person can be president for 11 years and 364 days.
Your question is answered by the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution, which states:”No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” Under the Twenty-Second Amendment, the maximum period of time that a person can be President is ten years, not twelve.
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. (XXII Amendment)
Thiis clearly puts a 10-year limit on the presidency.
Yes, there is a proviso however, that the VP can only serve a certain portion of his predecessors term, before he becomes ineligible to run for two terms of his own. I cannot remember exactly how long the period is.
