How does a liberal interpret thanking our troops as wrapping oneself in the American flag?

Recently, a long-time liberal friend of mine was making some disparaging comments about our military, and I asked him whether he had ever thanked our troops for the jobs they do and the sacrifices they make. He wouldn’t give a direct answer to a simple yes/no question. Instead, he gave an evasive answer and said he “doesn’t need to wrap himself in the American flag to prove he loves his country.” I asked him to explain, but he just talked in circles and only clouded the issue more.
