How long would republicans last in power if they delivered on their promises?
to cut taxes and spending?
Cutting taxes is easy and very popular but the republicans don’t appear to have the courage of their convictions to cuts spending. Every time the republicans get into power, tax cuts are done but deficit spending skyrockets.
How long will the little old lady tea party supporter support the republican party if her social security and medicare benefits are cut?
I would say the most 48 hours.
We need spending and tax cuts.
Pretty long. Unlike what Liberal Bias said, studies shows that tax cuts DO in fact create jobs. It can also increase revenue due to increased profits which you can find out if you do the math.
“Simply put, the additional burden of having to pay a high effective tax rate lowers an investment’s risk-return to the point where many executives say “Why bother?” and look for investments with higher returns – often in foreign countries.”
If the Republicans that were elected were conservatives it might be different. Country club Republicans are not what America needs right now. Our debt crisis is so severe that all things have to be on the table, no matter how unpopular.
they want to take baby steps, like health care . O that cry baby steps
Meh, republicans are hypocrites. They “hate” big government and yet are more than willing to take their medicare and social security checks and they oppose all forms of medicare/social security reforms (if you hate socialized programs, then at least have the decency to not take the check).
I love how they all say that cutting taxes=less deficit due to side supply theory. I hate to break it to republicans but the only way to cut the deficit in a serious manner is to cut spending and raise taxes.
Republicans are lying when they say they will cut spending. They don’t want to touch defense spending and piss off the defense contractors. The only other areas that are large enough to have any effect on Federal spending are Social Security and Medicare. With most people now saddled with 401K retirement plans that are going to be totally inadequate for retirees, it is going to be very unpopular to cut Social Security. Because the Republicans seem to have stalled health-care reform, we can project that health-care costs will continue to increase much faster than inflation and wages. Try telling seniors that Medicare is being replaced with a tax credit to buy private insurance. Privatizing government functions is a joke. We replaced a soldier making $30,000 a year with a private security contractor costing $450,000 a year. How does that save tax dollars?
Because the Republicans have boxed themselves in with this no tax increase pledge, the only thing they can continue is to run deficits and borrow the money, a la Reagan and Bush II.
You know, I watched an interesting program on CNN this afternoon called “Exit Interview”. They had both Republican and Democrat Congressmen and women that were calling it quits and not running again. The host asked them about the public opinions. One of the congressmen (can’t remember which) in effect, stated that the American People were never going to be happy with their government because they want to lower taxes, continue spending and get everything done that they want without having to cut anything they benefit from. He stated that it was impossible for them to do this, and therefore, the government would always look like it was not doing anything.
I think there is a point in there. We do sit here and argue about how we have to pay higher taxes, and some do come on here and suggest cutting certain programs – but the programs they want to cut are those that they don’t use or benefit from. Basically, everyone wants the goods, but they don’t want to pay for them. How are we – as a nation – supposed to function in that way? How are we going to continue to exist living like Rockefellers but do so by buying from Wal-Mart??
People can do what they like, but I do think there is a huge amount of truth in this, and that most are not going to like it at all. I didn’t like it when I first heard it, because I thought it made light of what I as a voter wanted. But then I really thought about it, and realized that he was right, and I was stupid just like most on here. People need to face that we are not going to get everything that we want, and that there will have to be some give with some take. To get one thing, we are going to have to sacrifice something else. If we want Medicare to remain uncut, then we are going to have to pay some higher taxes. That is a fact of life.
The rich would consolidate their wealth into fiefdoms of power with each having a military army to protect them. The other 90% of the population would become essentially serfs with a small intermediate mercenary segment of society.
The poor and elderly would be left to fend for themselves or depend on church charities.
