Because when a MAJORITY of the population collects welfare and assistance from the local, state, and federal governments INSTEAD of working and paying taxes to help fund programs like EDUCATION, then cruddy schools are almost always the result.
Sad fact of the matter is that as long as democrats and liberals keep getting elected with the promise of more hand outs, the problem will never go away.
Because Bush left them to die after Katrina and they still haven’t recovered.
Where have you been since 1969?
No U.
Maybe not ten years… But somewhere around that. Give a special thanks to the Handouts
Well because most of the state is Rep that cuts funding for schools, cuts programs for people of Color. Americans aren’t stupid you know.
Don’t forget Detroit . God bless.
Damn, my state is highly conservative, and budgets for education are being slashed.
For the same reason GOP led rural ares in states like Nebraska and Alabama have growing high drug crime and horrible public school systems.
Hmmm….. funny how the entire north east of America, run almost completely by democrats, has the lowest crime rates and highest education. Im sorry, but Louisianna, Mississippi, and Alabama, run by republicans, has the lowest education rates and highest teen pregnancy and obesity rates…. Oh and Texas has the highest crime rates…. and they are republican….. So sorry if one of our cities is crappy when you guys have entire states that are complete trash.
Edit: Ah my fault. Texas actually isnt too bad in crime rates…. its actually Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina with the highest crime rates in the nation. My bad. Oh wait…. yup… all of those are red states…. not blue states.
Democrats also lead cities like Cambridge and Boston two of the most educated cities in the country. Overall education levels of blue states are much higher than red states like Louisiana were New Orleans is. Poor state programs funnel down quite a bit. In fact the ONLY state that voted for McCain where more than 20 percent of the population over 25 has college degree was Texas. The rest are ALL under 20 percent. Pathetic uneducated white trash states that really shouldn’t be given any say in what the country does.
Because the people who can afford it move out of the city and put their kids in private school. Same here where I live….I moved out of the city limits to get away from the corruption of the Democrat majority city government, crime, and terrible schools.
Some people call it white flight….but it’s not limited to white people.
Please don;t tell me you actually think the Republicans are any better.
Blacks are the most christian minority group.
It’s the hate from christianity that spreads violence.
America is the most christian and yet the most violent country in the industrialized world. Coincidence?
Three of the five most violent cities in the United States are in the pious state of Texas.
Some of the best centers of education in the world are in more liberal cities, also.
Don’t you understand? It’s all the Republicans’ fault, for not getting elected in these areas by offering the same tax payer funded goodies these people mooch from that the Democrat’s offer. See, it’s all their fault.
Zzzzzzzzzzz. NOLA’s problems have nothing to do with it’s leadership being Democrats for the past decade. NOLA has problems of extreme poverty, which usually brings poor education, illiteracy and crime along with it.
Go to Chicago but only if you are allowed to pack
After ten years living there don’t you get it yet.
Democrats don’t send their kid’s to State system schools so why should they care.
Bush sat in the White House watching his social welfare bill reduced in the floods did he care.
The Political classes are the same the World over
Republican Governors in the States those cities are in, and 40 years of nearly all Republican Presidents. Nice try.
Because Republican politicians block every reasonable initiative put forth for the improvement of public education, ignoring that poor educational opportunities mean lousy jobs or no jobs, leading to intense resentment and hostility - and crime.
It’s very simple.
The core support for present-day Democrats is among the poor & uneducated. That means Democrat politicians want MORE poor, uneducated people very year - not less. Realize that poor, uneducated >> everywhere << have historically been easily manupulated into "voting as they are told" by "leaders" whose power only exists because the number of poor & uneducated continues to increase.
In cities like New Orleans, race has also been an issue because cynical Black politicians use it as a shield. Anyone who criticizes them is silenced with shrieks of "Racist!" if they are not Black and "Uncle Tom!" if that are Black.
Also, it’s been at least 30 years in New Orleans - not 10. All of the city administrations since the 1970s have done everything they could to drive out everyone with a job or an education. Destroying the public school system is an important goal in making certain no one gets even a basic education.
Realize that when everyone with an education is gone, there is no one left to ask awkward questions like "What happened to the other $100 Million?". Then the politicians can steal with both hands in broad daylight. That has been blatant in New Olreans since the 1980s.
Katrina killed more than 1800 people and destroyed more lives & property than one can imagine, so I am not glad Katrina happened. However, for good or bad, Katrina radically changed the political landscape of New Orleans. The huge "vote how you are told" public housing/section 8 population is about 75% gone, which means the ability of their "leadership" to swing elections is also gone.
The changes since 2006 in city government are very visible, with most of the city council being replaced, a new DA, and so on - down to the school board.
However, Nagin is still mayor and he owes a significant part of his re-election in 2006 to the old system, which was able to deliver the win via the extraordinary measures taken to allow evacuees in other places to cast their votes (and to vote how they were told). Even then, Landrieu would have won if misguided Republicans had not voted against him by voting for Nagin.
The elections of 2010 should continue the positive changes we saw from the 2008 elections. It will take time to reverse more than 30 years of City Hall being occupied by criminals disguised as a municipal government.
New Orleans is not alone in the situation, and cities like Detroit & Baltimore are having the same problems for the same reasons. For good or bad, cities like Detroit & Baltimore have not had a Katrina to change their political landscapes.
