Republicans have the elephant because its the strongest one of the smartest animals on the planet. The Dems got a jackazz becaise that best sums them up.
The elephant was started by cartoonist Thomas Nast. In it there was a zoo with the Democratic donkey where a lion skin and scaring away the other animals. One was an elephant labeled the Republican vote.
