How is it possible to be a conservative Democrat?
My father identified himself as a conservative Democrat, then as an Independent. He is a blue-collared worker since he runs the production line at his work who is part of the Teamster’s Union, so he votes for the candidates that most support unions. He says he voted for Reagan when he ran for President because of how crappy of a President Jimmy Carter was, so Reagan was one of the only alternatives. He says that he thinks JFK, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton were good Presidents, even though they had different political stances.
I’m a conservative Democrat – I generally support Democratic ideas – health care, civil rights, better access to education for all Americans, collective bargaining – but I like these ideas to be tempered with economic reality.
It is becoming rare since the Democratic party puts illegals before union members.
He’s not too politically minded. He takes one or two issues and votes accordingly.
He sounds pretty logical….I agree with him that Reagan and Clinton have been the only two good presidents in my lifetime. I am a pro-life Democrat, so I guess I am similar to your father….Why don’t you just accept him for his beliefs and quit trying to pigeon hole him into a category? Politics is not always black and white. I admore your father for having the courage to admit that a a Republicand and a Democrat were both good presidents. Most people hate the other party so much that they will never admit that someone from the other party was a good president
Its not…
what is it your missing? your father is the best example of a conservative democrat. is there such a thing as a liberal Republican? yes, Rudy Guiliani and many Northeast Republicans are liberal. in fact, I believe most American are moderate, slightly left or right of center.
makes as much sense as a liberal conservative… lol, see how funny that sounds?? seems to me your father has his own set of views and doesnt vote according to party lines, which is what every american voter should do…. he is an independent.
I tend to agree. I think of myself as a conservative Democrat, I want a strong, but sane foreign policy and a liberal but sane domestic policy. I also want to be able to say that some things are wrong religiously (like abortion or Gay Marriage) and still understand how in a secular society others may disagree.
I think politically Liberal Republicans (Rudy and mike b) and Conservative Democrats are the most sane politically
It is possible to be a conservative Democrat. Just because your voter ID card says democrat does not mean you must agree with everything that party says. My mother is a registered Democrat and has been since she was in college. She is a conservative evangelical Christian and usually votes for the Republican candidates. Since she has never changed her party affiliation she is a conservative Democrat.
Yes, there are conservative Democrats out there and I hope he’s paying close attention as to what’s happening within his own party. They’re all but gone. Political correctness and socialism has taken over.
I would suggest that he take a close look at all of the candidates to see who is getting the support of large corporations and special interest groups. Those who ‘claim’ are for the middle guy, are the worst of the lot. Corporate America isn’t going to support them, knowing that they’re putting themselves at risk.
No names need be mentioned.
Most conservatives have a very low intelligence, is it possible he was drunk when he said it?
He is more of a centerist…more than likely advocates less spending. He obviously thinks about what he does and is not one to tow the party line…..good for him, he is smart
I think it is just referring to Democrats that lean to the more conservative side of the spectrum. However, that is not as common today as it once was.
that just means he does not embrace liberalism or conservatism and chooses to be an independant thinker
[good for him]
Conservative Democrat?
Look at it this way. There’s a big difference between a Nebraska Democrat and a California Democrat. They both belong to the same party, but the one from Nebraska is going to lean a lot more to the right than the one from California.
The same is true for Republicans. I’m guessing a Republican from Bay Area California is a lot more liberal than a Republican from the Bible Belt.
It may be a difficult concept for you, but not everything is black or white. The world isn’t divided into absolutes. It might be better for simpletons if it were black and white, but it simply isn’t reality. Take off the blinders and you won’t have to waste five points on Y!A.
Democrats beleive the country should be run in washington. A conservative dem is a guy who wants lower taxes and smaller government but still hold the power in washington. A republican wants power to be at the local level. Locals know how to govern themselves. If thats not good enough e-mail me and a spill somemore.
I think an independent might be the closest you come.
I know a lot of liberal Republicans, or at least in the middle. I’m in the middle Republican like I’m for Gay marriage, let them get married it doesn’t bother me. I vote for both parties even though the Dems have made me so made lately with their all or nothing attitude I might not vote for Dems anymore. I’m more Republican because I’m for defense of our country, education, and not penalizing people for doing well.
I have also worked for Republican candidates that also support some unions and Teamsters in the local area, (I don’t because they tell me were to shop and what to do) I don’t like people telling me what to do. you almost have to alot of plants and factories. like Jeep, & Libby Glass.
I know most Dems aren’t willing to budge or compromise on their views which is why some are getting further and further away from the middle. I’m glad to see there are more middle of the road people, alot more would get done if there were more middle of the road people in Congress & the House.
The last conservative Democrat was Zell Miller. As Zell was fond of saying, he didn’t leave the party, the party left him.
When you father was younger the Democrat party had not yet been hijacked by the socialists, and conservatism has always been a democratic trait, not a party trait but a democratic trait.
Todays democrats have either stood idly by while their party was destroyed or they are part of the problem, socialists.
I am a liberal, in the classic sense, and a capitalist. I voted Democrat a lot over the years, but since they have abandoned liberty for socialism I am left to vote for Republicans 99% of the time, with the possible exception of removing a careerist from Congress. For the last eight years I will not vote for someone in the House or Senate who have been in office more than 12 years.
Politicians and in particular socialist politicians seem to really get a kick out of the partisanship by the citizenry, it seems they feel we will not notice their crimes being to busy fighting among ourselves. And you know what, for most Democrat voters, that strategy has worked well for the socialist politicians.
