@kahlitamichelle81 what immediate history to blacks have to refer to other than their skin color. You certainly can’t refer to Africa and its history with the same semblance because you haven’t experienced it for yourself you cant call your self truly american when every time you fill out a legal document you are refer to as a hyphenated american it would be ludicrous to think someone could readily call themselves all thats left is your blackness so yeah i agree100% with his statement.
I laughed out loud when he told story about quentin tarantino…the man is so loopy bless his cotton socks. I would have had to say something, in a jokey way of course..
Did not know who he was but i like him.
I think you would be interested in the memoir titled My Daddy The Devil and Me! It is a true story of how a young girl was not only molested by her father but was also taught to prostitute and bank fraud, while he kept her under his influence through drugs and brainwashing. Its fasinating!!
@kahlitamichelle81 well I believe that people are being manipulated by their instinctual drives… and one that works on everyone is the desire to belong. One of the stereotypes that exist for black males is the uneducated and poor one, and unfortunately for the uneducated and poor, of this group, they do look for very obvious symbols, in this case Bling. It’s the instinctual drives that are being manipulated and they are what TV and film live off of. It’s the insecurity that is exploited.
@bragladish On a personal level, I have to say, it’s refreshing to communicate with someone who has a difference of opinion but has the ability to express said opinion without grudge or hatred, you’re cool :}
@bragladish you honestly believe that, interesting. So if an educated black woman were shown on TV, that would be a reflection of the culture? Because all I see on TV, or popular TV I should say, is that of bitter, angry, man hating, or promiscuous images depicted by woman of all races. If what you were saying is actually the case, more color and more culture would be displayed on major network TV. Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree with you, it should be that way but the fact is, it’s not.
nothing is shoved down yr throat from tv or popular media, popular media lives off of the culture and is informed by the desires and attitudes of the culture… it’s not the other way around. If it didn’t resonate with the people as something they understand it wouldn’t be used, because it would have no effect. So, it is about image and the images are about the subtext.
@bragladish I understand the symbol of a black president. It’s precedent in itself for America as a whole because having a black president or a minority president for that matter has never been done before and the fact the he’s black, I totally get that. However, the idea of bling being a symbol of status feeds and perpetuates the stereotype. That’s what’s shoved down our throats from TV and music videos, bling. That’s what’s needed to show how prominent you are, that I don’t understand.
you just don’t understand men, their pride and how living in a society like America can be damaging to them: specially if yr a minority. why do you think Bling is the prominent symbol for a black man? Their whole culture is reactionary to the shame they feel due to the stereotyping they live with. Symbols of wealth are used to counter their perception of them as poor, uneducated and stupid. It’s very important to them to have symbols in their culture that elevate them, like a black president!
@bragladish I find you and your “method of thinking” quite amusing because with all this bantering back and forth, you’ve yet to tell me what it is exactly about my initial statement that was “idiotic….” now what?
wow…..after reading what I wrote that’s all your feeble little mind could come up with…I feel sorry for you and your lack of intelligence.
By the way, I’m not white, or a man for that matter….now what?
Why is it, that when a black man gets asked a question about the President, the answer is always “we as blacks…” when it should be “we as Americans…” Yea it’s the first time we’ve had a black president, that’s cool really it is, but instead of focusing on that, lets focus on what the President can and will do in his presidency. It really bothers me that for black people in the movie industry, it’s about being black. There’s so much more to life than the color of one’s skin…DUH!!!
Wow, that was so authentic, honest dialogue. We need to speak more truths about our differences, which makes us the same. I love this Director!
now thats just mean
