@deablanque China doesn’t need to increase their minimum wage, all they need to do is let their currency rise. The currency peg between the Yuan and the dollar is what is causing the inflation in China, and China is not acting responsibly until they let the Yuan appreciate in value. Once China does this, Americans will have to accept a 0.68 Yuan/hr. salary or starve to death. No amount of US money printing will help since it will be worthless. Your welfare will be in the hands of the chicoms.
@XulChris By the way, you say the price of goods and services as well as labor need to go down? Well China has had to increase its minimum wage twice this year because of the increasing cost of living. Should they leave it at a lower level to try to force prices down again? Or do you actually think that would actually work? Inflation happens and you need to be able to respond to it and China has done so responsibly. When will America?
@XulChris No one has ever been retarded enough to say $100/hr. You were the only person to ever bring that up. We are talking about a “living wage”. As it is America’s minimum wage is below a “living wage”. And don’t be so narrow minded to say we need to manufacture more. America needs to beef up its education and become a knowledge economy. You want wages that compete with China? So you want to pay american workers $0.68/hr? Why not just bring back slavery or indentured servitude?
@deablanque LOL, so if you make a law that says you must pay $100/hr. and if you can’t afford it, it’s because you aren’t efficient enough and workers have nothing to do with efficiency. Our problem is that we are a consumer economy, that is why the trade deficit is out of whack. We need to manufacture more, not consume more. The only way to manufacture more is to have wages that compete with China. China is about to cut us off which means you will be MUCH poorer next year. Good luck.
@XulChris And are you saying that the price of labor should go down before the cost of gods/services? In its austerity measures Ireland has reduced the minimum wage, but that has been after two years of significant price drops. As it stands people i America on minimum wage are one step from living on the streets. The day when minimum wage is over the poverty line, then you can think about lowering it.
@XulChris If a company can’t improve its efficiency than it deserves to go bankrupt. If you want a consumer economy you need to pay people enough so that they can buy the products that are available. If you don’t have minimum wage then less people can afford the products being produces, then the manufacturers either lay some staff off or go bankrupt. Even if prices do go down, there will always be some products that you cant reduce the price of.
@deablanque A company will not hire anyone if they lose money hiring that person. If a company must pay $7 an hour for someone who only produces $5 an hour worth of goods, that company will go bankrupt. In a recession/depression prices should go down, that includes the price of labor. Government fixing of prices only leads to shortages. Set a minimum wage at $100/hr and you end up with zero employment, not a bunch of rich people.
@XulChris I have been on minimum wage, and unemployment benefits. I hated it and improved myself, but without that help it would have been very difficult to do that. . It sounds like like you have been lucky enough to not need to be on unemployment or minimum wage. So don’t judge others from less privileged backgrounds until you have had some of their experiences.
@XulChris Soemtimes the choices of who to work for are limited. IT’s live as a slave, or die o starvation. That kind of poverty starts crime. There is no other way out. A company forced to pay minimum wage will still hire the same amount of people as they need, so how does it cause poverty and crime? As for your internship, you knew that afterwards you would be able to get a decent/well paid job. Not everyone is i that situation.
@deablanque BS. If you don’t like what you are being paid, work for someone else, or start your own business, or learn a skill to improve your productivity. I interned for free when I was in college to improve my skills. I gladly accepted slave wages in order to improve myself. Minimum wage simply makes people with little or no skills priced out of the market. They are forced into illegal professions like drug dealing and prostitution in order to survive.
@XulChris Minimum wage was created to prevent unregulated industry from retaining a defacto form of slavery. Many companies would choose to pay a wage people would starve on if they were allowed. Minimum wage is shit as it is. But at least in most places people can survive on it. How the fuck does minimum wage create drug dealing and prostitution? That is just the stupidest concept I have ever thought. Both those trades were around well before minimum wage was ever even considered.
@XulChris Yeah, move to Asia right now. I’ll love getting that picture of you locked up in a concentration camp starving. I’ll be happy either way. I’ll have money and a job well long after your rotted in the ground. And that puts a smile on my face
@splicedenergy I’ll be fine, I’ll just move to Asia where the jobs are because I don’t mind actually working for a living to survive. All the Marxists can stay here in America where all the entitlements are.
It’s quite apt having Gingrich’s smug fat face with its perennial cheshire-cat smirky grin offering up this nonsensical “american exceptionalism” propaganda as respectable mantra. This loathsome and repugnant runt of a man comes across as a slimy slick used-car salesman, full of hollow saws and flimsy for-instances.
@splicedenergy I don’t care if your husband is George Fucking Washington, you aren’t entitled to shit. And whatever you are getting from the government is going to become worthless within a couple of years anyway you stupid bitch.
@XulChris So now all can see what a little bitch you are. I no longer take you seriously. I do not take you seriously because you are a troll and you still wet the bed. Keep on little bitch, you can try to hide your shame from others in this open forum, anything else you pm me will also be put on display for all to see. You do not get the luxuary of talking to me like that and not be judged by everyone else too. I think that most people would agree that you are the problem here.
@XulChris This is what you pm’d me. You wouldnt have pm’d it if you were not ashamed of yourself for saying it “@splicedenergy You’re psychotic. I’m really going to get you going now. I’m glad your hubby died a worthless death. He is a fucking ass hole for going over to Afghanistan to protect poppy fields. He died for a corrupt government, what a jerk off. I had to pay a ton of taxes so your ass hole husband could die for nothing. Thanks a lot. I hope you end up starving to death”
If almost all the Democrats in the Senate vote the right way on an issue, and all of the Republicans vote the wrong way, we as activists shouldn’t make the mistake of letting the Republicans off the hook.
President Obama should hold the Republicans’ feet to the fire.
As always, I’m not directing my comment at you enough. I’m directing it far too much at general audiences who might wander in. [And who undoubtedly won't! lol]
I’m suffering from the same problem the President is. I can talk until I’m blue in the face, but I’ll still be drowned in a cacophony of other voices. And outspent by the unloved and embittered sons of billionaires.
I think he administered so far roughly 25% of the lifetime dose of speeches that the average Joe will be willing to take.
What -did- fail, spectacularly, in my opinion, was the news media.
Or maybe it’s the entire “infosphere”. The Truth is out there. It’s just buried under 100 tons of right-wing think tank bullshit. So it never reaches the voters.
I don’t think holding out your hand prevents you from twisting people’s arms. The metaphor does work, but, in negotiations, there’s no contradiction.
People can argue all day long that Barack Obama didn’t spend enough time using the bully pulpit. I actually saw quite a lot of him. I’m not sure putting his own face in the American People’s faces more often than he did would have been effective.
But I also think it’s important not to let Republican masterminds write -our- scripts for us -and- Fox “News”‘s at the same time. Republican masterminds want us liberal activists to call him weak and too nice. I, respectfully, decline to be their puppet.
When they slapped his hand away, he held it out again. Not because he’s trying to be nice to them, but in order to show the world who they are, and who we are.
The Democratic Party is a two-party party. I don’t think the fact that it’s made up of a wide spectrum of perspectives that represents most of what Americans believe is a weakness of the President. I think it’s a strength of the Democratic Party.
I don’t think Obama would be as liberal as I am even if he -were- granted absolute power. And we have every right to push him to the left.
