What is the difference between a conservative notion of identification and a liberal notion of identity?
Can someone explain what is a conservative notion of “identification” and a liberal notion of identity? These relate to race, culture or social group but not as in political.
One way of analyzing the research underlying conceptions of giftedness is to review existing definitions along a continuum ranging from conservative to liberal. Conservative and liberal are used here not in their political connotations, but rather according to the degree of restrictiveness that is used in determining who is eligible for special programs and services.
Have the obvious advantage of expanding the conception of giftedness, they create two dilemmas. First, they introduce a values issue by forcing educators to delineate potentially valuable lines of human activity. Second, they introduce even greater subjectivity in the measurement and assessment of children’s potentialities.
