I agree with you on that point. We have to be constantly vigilant about government’s overuse of power, as democratic governments can sometimes go the way of fascism; witness Venezuela. However, our country was founded on liberty as ingrained in our Constitution. So we can usually trust our security agencies to not use their power to abuse people for no reason and we have the Congress and Courts to keep them in check. So I would suggest you not be so worried about the abuses.

My point isnt that they have, but that they have the power to. the whole basis of the constitution was to limit centralized power, and to give all citizens inalienable human rights. The simple fact that the government COULD do something is a smack in the face tot he founding fathers. They could suspect you of being a terrorist if you disagree witht hem, if you are a political opponent, if you are a criminal whom they have not found evidence on, the list goes on.
I think there are many good decent liberals out there who simply have a different philosophy of life and different values. I live in a blue state and it seems almost everyone around me is a liberal and most of them are good people. Unfortunately almost every outspoken liberal in politics and on outlets like MSNBC are extremely hard left and pretty nasty. Where are the reasonable ones? Otherwise I agree with your comments regarding civility and demonizing each other.
