google and see how much debt we owe for Medicare alone. You will be enlightened.
If they continue saying so after you clarify this, then they need to stop listening to Beck and co.
You are right in that the public option did not pass. But conservatives are against it ever passing. They say this because private insurance companies would not be able to compete with the government on pricing. Private companies are motivated by profit, and can only lower prices so much. The government can price anything as low as they want because they get their money from taxes, borrowing, and printing money. Eventually, this type of system would place the private insurance companies out of business (or at least most of them), forcing everyone onto the insurance provided by the government. This would be very expensive for the government to run, so they would have to tax more, borrow more, and print more money. All of these options negatively affect the economy, and at some point the government will have to address these problems. Countries have credit ratings just like individuals do. The U.S. is on the verge of losing its triple A credit rating already, which makes it more hard to get loans from other countries, and increases the interest rates on the loans that the government is able to buy. If things ever reach this point, the government will have to ration not only health care, but also many other social programs that many people are dependent upon.
