Virginia is coming off of a budget surplus. The man behind the Old Dominion’s journey back is Gov. Bob McDonnell… The Christian Broadcasting Network CBN www.cbn.com
Speaking about the 2011 General Assembly Session, Governor McDonnell remarked, “In just six productive weeks, the General Assembly has worked diligently to pass, in a strong bipartisan manner, legislation that will greatly improve Virginia’s transportation system, increase access to higher education, streamline and reform government, and help grow opportunities in our economy. This is proof Virginia still sets the example for the rest of the nation by demonstrating that we can work together and put aside party politics to provide common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our citizens.”
How did Bob McDonnell take Virginia from Budget Deficits to Budget Surpluses? Here’s how.
On Sept. 29, 2010, Operation Smile broke ground on its new $20 million global headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The new headquarters — scheduled to be completed by early 2012 — will allow Operation Smile to grow its international reach and education programs, making it the world’s premier resource for advanced cleft care; research; as well as education and training. Operation Smile works in more than 60 countries worldwide to provide quality surgical care and give new smiles for children suffering from facial deformities. Special guests at the groundbreaking ceremony included Donald Trump, Jr. who serves on Operation Smile’s Board of Directors; Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen McDonnell; an Operation Smile World Care patient from India who is in the US for reconstructive surgery; Virginia Delegate Ronald A. Villanueva; and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare for the Government of Assam in India. Donald Trump, Jr. and Governor McDonnell served as the keynote speakers, and Virginia Beach Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. addressed the audience as well.
Governor Bob McDonnell was joined by delegates and senators from throughout Southside, western and southwestern Virginia as he signed his first bills since taking office. The Governor signed HB 1308, patroned by Delegate Bill Carrico (R-Galax) and SB 680 patroned by Senator Phillip Puckett (D-Tazewell), identical pieces of emergency legislation that will immediately reduce the cost of electricity to Appalachian Powers residential customers by approximately 12%. The legislation will suspend the interim rates that went into effect in December when the Company filed an application for a rate increase with the State Corporation Commission. The law will no longer allow interim rates in cases like this one, and APCo agreed to apply the law immediately to their current rates.
