Because just 40 years ago, people died trying to get equal rights in this country. Minorities had the right to “vote” but they had to pay a “poll tax” and answer questions such as how many bubbles in a bar of soap………………..to vote. When you are poor paying to vote instead of putting food on the table was a difficult decision. Only those that lived through it can know how far this country has come.
In south Texas when I was in elementary school we were spanked if we spoke spanish and we lined up last. Anglo children lined up first for lunch, and then Mexicans.
Barack Obama being president is a big deal because he’s is the first African American president, 40 years ago African American’s wern’t alowed to vote, and now we have our first African American president.
