Christie’s Cuts May Push N.J. Property Tax Up 8% (Update2)

April 29 (Bloomberg) — New Jersey property tax bills, the highest in the U.S., may rise an average of $600 to make up for Governor Chris Christie’s proposed cuts in school and municipal aid, the state Senate budget committee chairman said.
Towns and schools may boost taxes as much as 8.2 percent as they seek to replace lost funding, Senator Paul Sarlo, a Democrat from Wood-Ridge, said at a hearing in Trenton today. The average property levy was $7,281 last year, according to state data.
“This is going to be a seismic shift onto property taxes,” Sarlo said in an interview. “They are being asked to shoulder a larger burden this year.”
Christie, 47, a Republican who took office Jan. 19, seeks to close a $10.7 billion deficit without raising taxes. His $29.3 billion spending plan would lower state aid to education by $820 million and trim municipal aid by $445 million.
Sarlo’s projection “would be true” if schools and local government “choose not to do what they need to do in the current fiscal environment — cuts and finding ways to be efficient,” said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the governor. “We know it will be difficult but if the state can do it, it can be done.”
New Jersey voters, stung by rising real estate levies and the worst recession since the 1930s, defeated a record 59 percent of school budgets earlier this month. Rejected plans go to local governing bodies that will decide if additional cuts are needed.

Here is the funny part he called the rebates a scam and now he wants to pass them out again. Hey Christie why not just give the money to the cities and towns so they can lower the taxes?
I am not a labor union so why punish me?
Why do you Republicans sound so much like Demonrats? That is exactly what Corzine said after he cut aid to the Municipalities. You guys criticize demonrats but act exactly the same as they do. I should have voted for that Independent guy. I screwed but but I promise you I will never do that again.
They are raising mine in WA also 8%.
Christie isn’t afraid to balance the budget on the backs of the working and middle class families. Hooray!
Blame the unions.
I thought you liberals hated property owners?
He’ll lower property taxes back down after Mafia/Unions are under control.
Ain’t that a bit ch. They complain about the rich getting their taxes raised, but are happy go lucky at the thought of get theirs raised. WTF is wrong with conservatives?
someone has to pay for Gov.Christie’s meals. Can you imagine how many tons of greasy food it takes to entice that chubby fat butt out of bed in the morning?
When you live in a state that has been ruined by the mob, unions an liberal thinking, money must be raised somehow.
Christie will blame the increases on local government. NJ schools better start figuring out how to squeeze 40 desks into those classrooms.
When it goes from “may” to “shall” get back to us. I “may” win the lottery. More Democrat fear mongering
there is not such thing as a free lunch. NJ has to pay for all the sins of the past, by what ever means needed. that may include cuts in spending and increases (small) in taxes. -… ….
Everyone is going to pay more regardless of where you live. Too bad 0 doesn’t have as much spine as Christie dose.
Its time for these corrupt municipalities and their employees to live within their means. I’m not a fan of paying somebody a high five figure salary to pick up my garbage. Its time to crack these unions
No, Christie will not allow a property tax increase on a state level, irrespective of that opinion piece. Local officials will be reticent to anger their local voters.

According to the news article, it would be the towns and schools that raise property taxes, not Chris Christie. Might wanna read it again. If that happens and it probably will, the the town council and the school boards will be held responsible, as they should be. Hopefully the people in those towns will vote them out of office.
Did you not read what you pasted?
“Sarlo’s projection “would be true” if schools and local government “choose not to do what they need to do in the current fiscal environment — cuts and finding ways to be efficient,” said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the governor.”
Overall my taxes are not spiraling out of control as they do under democrats, Christie has my vote next election too.
Isn`t it you liberal democrat socialist that have bragged that you wouldn`t mind paying more in taxes ?? Looks as if Chris is just following your 2 boys , Obama & Biden`s advice ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TPfjFp3HwI Can`t take your own medicine ? So it`s OK if Obama & Biden tax you into oblivion , but you take offense with Chris for an 8% increase ?
You’re to quick to post this, proof read.
X Cristie for President 2016.
You can’t have him until he helps NJ out of trouble that the Demo’s put us in. Like Corzine
